Chrome and Manganese Testing, Inspection and Certification Services by Cotecna

In 2023, the global chrome and manganese markets saw significant production and trade activity driven by the demand for stainless steel and other industrial applications. Due to the homogeneous nature of stainless steel products, it is essential to determine the quality of chrome and manganese ore to ensure product quality.
The total global chrome ore production reached 39.4 MMT, with South Africa leading the market by producing 46% of the global supply (18 MMT). Other major producers include Turkey (6 MMT), Kazakhstan (6 MMT), India (4.2 MMT), and Finland (2.2 MMT). Despite a decline in global stainless-steel production, the demand for chrome is growing due to an increase in the production of higher-grade stainless steel, which requires more chrome.
In terms of ferrochrome production, China remains the dominant player, producing 7.92 MMT, or 48% of the global total. South Africa follows with 3.53 MMT, while Kazakhstan and India produce 1.56 MMT and 1.52 MMT, respectively.
The global production of stainless steel, which is heavily dependent on chrome, stood at 57.4 MMT in 2023, with China accounting for 62% of this production.
The manganese market also showed strong production levels, with global output reaching 60 MMT. South Africa, Australia, Gabon, and Brazil are the leading producers, while China remains the top importer, absorbing approximately 31.5 MMT of the global manganese trade. Other key importers include India, South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.
Our Key Locations
Cotecna’s strategic presence in major chrome and manganese markets ensures that we are well-positioned to meet the demands of both producers and consumers. Our operations span several key countries that are pivotal to the global trade of these metals.
- South Africa: As the largest producer of both chrome and manganese ores, South Africa is central to our operations. South Africa’s vast resources supply a significant portion of the world’s chrome and manganese needs, making it a critical location for Cotecna's inspection, testing, and sampling services. We continue to strengthen our brand awareness in South Africa.
